Abstract
In a recent seminar on utopias and ecological issues, the phrase “We believe we can live without life” resonated deeply, expressed by Adrián Almazán, who recently moved to the region from Spain. This commentary critiques contemporary notions of humans living disconnected from nature, such as in space tourism, exemplified by figures like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. The author emphasizes the unsustainable idea that businesses can pollute without consequence, highlighting that access to clean water is a fundamental human right denied to billions. The discussion also critiques claims that ecological degradation is merely a property issue, pointing to Latin America’s progressive environmental laws, such as Ecuador’s constitutional recognition of nature’s rights. Ultimately, the author argues that disconnection from ecological realities threatens our very existence, urging a reevaluation of our relationship with the environment and our voting choices.
