Quiero vivir con lagartos – I want to live with lizards

Abstract
The author reflects on their journey to a small piece of land they discovered over five years ago, previously overrun with weeds and litter, but also home to a small lizard. They decided to clean the area while preserving the lizard’s habitat, allowing for a unique coexistence each spring and summer. However, the alarming rate of species extinction, as highlighted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), raises concerns about the future of biodiversity. The article also discusses recent encounters with visitors to Santa Fe through a transatlantic research project on ecological justice, emphasizing the importance of perspective in appreciating nature. A poignant moment occurs when Stefano Saluzzo sees the lizard for the first time, symbolizing the fragility of species as the lizard later disappears. The author warns against the denial of environmental damage and urges action to protect the planet, arguing that meaningful connections with nature are essential for happiness and survival.
