Federal University of Santa Catarina is a public university in southern Brazil, which “mission is to produce, systematize and socialize philosophical, scientific, artistic and technological knowledge”. UFSC stands out with 611 research groups, 3,555 projects, 23,901 extension initiatives and 366 cooperation agreements with institutions on all continents. Its academic excellence is recognized in national and international rankings, filing 8th in Brazil and 4th among federal institutions, according to the QS World University Rankings 2024, which analyzed 430 institutions in 25 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

- The UFSC’s Postgraduate Program in Law (PPGD) is recognized for its innovation and excellence. Focusing on training professionals with high scientific standards and ethical values, it has 34 doctors as permanent professors and 4 collaborating and guest professors (national and foreign), offers courses at its headquarters in Florianópolis and in other states of the federation, and also maintains international collaborations. Its focus on Philosophy, Critical Law and attention to international transformations reflects its prominent position on the national and international scene.
- The Environmental Law and Political Ecology in Risk Society Research Group (GPDA), linked to the UFSC’s PPGD, investigates Ecological Law with a transdisciplinary approach. Its focus is comprehensive protection, including the rights of nature and the vulnerable, using, in some cases, geoinformation to monitor ecological integrity. The group also promotes environmental citizenship and offers free legal assistance to environmental civil associations in Florianópolis, aiming to prevent environmental damage.
- The Ecological Justice Observatory (OJE) is a research group linked to the UFSC’s PPGD, focused on international law, the environment, human rights and animal rights. Seeks systemic approaches to environmental conflicts in Brazil, with an emphasis on democratic strengthening. Its objective is to defend the environment, considering humans and non-human animals. In addition, it offers free legal assistance through the Ecological Justice Clinic to mitigate socio-environmental conflicts in Santa Catarina, including cases of violation of environmental legislation.
